Converting/Editing my VHS tapes into DVDs?

Ok here is the deal, I have a ton of vhs tapes of programs that I have recorded. These tapes are taking up a lot of space in my basement and I would like to convert all of the programs into dvds. However, I don't simply want to copy the vhs tapes into dvds, I'd like to be able to edit the footage(ie commercials) before its finally put on dvd. How could I go about this?

Get a DVD recorder or have a photo shop do the conversions...

to statr you will need some sort of video capture device - these are available at your local PC shop and USB pluggable to make life easy.
Roxio (that i use) has the ability to do simple editing of your movies before commiting them to Disk - so try that out.
