Have you ever been put in the position were you were the only?

family to make the choice to pull the plug on a family member?

I was given that call today and that totally mind fked my mind!!!!!
how did you handle it?

i was put in that position and i know its not a happy one. it seemed like either way i was doomed to feel crappy about it. finally i realized that the man i loved isnt really "there" anymore and sometimes the only way to show that love is to let go. i made the choice to pull the plug and even tho its been 20 years i still hurt. but he doesnt , not anymore. his organs were donated so in a way he lives on. and that has helped me a whole lot. wanting to keep him alive was ( looking back at it) a totally selfish act, i didnt want to be alone, i didnt want to loose him. i didnt truly understand at the time that by letting him go physically i never lost him because his memory lives on , in me , with me.

I have never had to make that decision, but in my line of work there are many families who do. I would suggest looking at the living will and the status code to make theat decision. Usually someone has that already made up before they get sick. If they do not, remember tpast conversations you have had with them to determine if they wanted to be kept alive or not. Hard decision. I hope you feel comfortable with the decision you choose.
