Please Help! I am unable to locate my taxes due from 2005, and cannot locate my past employer for the info.? |
I am so bad at this, and apparently not so bright. Can someone tell me how to explain, or handle this problem with the IRS? I made less than 6,000 that year (sad, I know). I'm just scared to death to even call and explain my circumstances to the IRS!! Can anyone tell me what the next step may be. I'm actually on the phone with the IRS now and waiting for customer assistance. Dear God, what are they going to do to me? I am currently working and able to make monthly payments. Does anyone know what I may owe them if my earnings were less than $6,000? Including late fees. I'm just looking for a ball park figure here. Yes, I am ignorant and irresponsible. I would grately appreciate any advice given! Did you file a return in 2005? If you did, you need to fill out IRS form 4506 to get a copy of your return sent to you. If you did not file a return, file form 4506-T with the IRS to get your W-2(s) from that tax year. Then, you'll need to either go to an accountant to file the return for you, or you can do it yourself, to figure out how much you owe (or how much they owe you). If you earned less than $6,000, you more than likely will not have to pay any taxes for that year. If you filed and don't know how much you owe IRS CSR will let you know how much you owe and give you the option for an installment agreement. The good thing is you are trying to work with the IRS. The first step which you are now taking is the hardest and after that if you owe just make sure to pay your monthly payment. If your total income for the year was under $6000 you don't owe any federal income tax unless you were a dependent that year, then you would owe something. I'm not so sure you owe them much. Your tax for $6,000 for 2005 was only $603 if you filed as single according to the 1040EZ form for 2005. they have bigger fish to fry out there. If you made less than $6000 you would have easily gotten a refund. You would of probably taken the standard deduction(5150?) and one personal exemption(3100?) , so you likely would not of had tax-able income...... unless you happened to be claimed on someone elses return, then you would have likely taken the standard deduction and would of had enough withheld to cover your little tax. Relax. If you made the $6K as an employee, you probably had more than enough tax withheld so you are probably due a refund PLUS interest. You don't have to pay tax on the whole $6K anyway. You get to take off the standard deduction and if you were not a dependent of anybody else, you also get to take off an exemption for yourself. Between the two of those, the $6K is completely tax free. |
