How to honor my father on Father's Day? He has always been so mean and still is.?

Insulting, always picking at me, I'm never good enough. But we are having a Father's Day gathering and I can't just ignore him. How to handle it? Father's Day always makes me feel bad, he never really acted like a father, more like the neighborhood bully, calling names, never a nice thing to say. He didn't even help me when my first husband was beating on me. Any suggestions on what to do, how to get through it? My brothers will both get him a gift - I have no idea what to get him. I accept that he is who he is, and will never be a nice father but I don't like him and find it hard to honor him as my father. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I always had a problem with Father's Day. My dad was abusive to me my whole life. He is 94 ( I'm 52) and at times he is still verbaly abusive. My mom, sister and brother are gone and It is only me and my husband who see him and help him out. I will give my dad a card and a magazine subscription. I always talk respectfully to him and if he starts being mean I explain to him that I love him but I am not going to accept that treatment. I tell him that I will cut our visit short if he can not treat me with the same respect that I have always given him. I give him some time to cool off and then I'll visit him again. It doesn't take long for him to figure out that he needs to treat me with respect. I ask God to help me show him love. God loves me and has forgiven me of so much, I need to forgive my dad and show him love. Remember you are not to be a door mat but you can always talk to him in a calm and respectful way. I am thankful I have a Heavenly Father that loves me and makes up for the mean earthly father I have. Pray to God and ask Him to help you in this area.

Wow! That is terrible. I feel that it is only necessary to "honor thy father and mother" if they have earned that kind of respect through being good parents. Maybe get him a book on parenting as a subtle hint!

I know it is hard but just keep trying to love him; don't give up on him. You could get him a tie or a cuff links.

Sorry to hear that your relationship with your dad is awful. I think the best thing to do to honor him is to forgive him and like you said accept him as the person he is. Maybe for a gift, a card that would have a message that explains the hopes of a better relationship in the future, with respect and yet a loving message. You may have to look and read a lot of them, but you'll find one. Good Luck and remember hes your dad and not all of us have our dads anymore or ever. Keep your head up..
