How should I handle this complaint with my boss?

This has happened once in awhile in the 2 years I have been employed at this office. Someone who knows my boss, calls him and complains they cannot hear me when I answer the phone. This person knows my boss' personal office line as well, and he called my boss on his personal line to tell him this. I answer the phone daily at work, and I NEVER receive complaints from clients about not hearing me clearly when I answer the phone. They only question they have when calling is my name (it's an asian name) since it is not common. Also, my boss likes to complain that he cannot hear me speaking to him on the phone while he is driving on his cell, with music and his kids in the background. I'm really frustrated at this point b/c either who ever calls him and complains about me is deaf and making me look bad, not to mention how my boss obviously doesn't understand that having music, 3 kids, and driving in the background will limit one's hearing on the cell phone.

You need to tell your boss when he calls on his cell with a carful of screaming kids it is difficult for him to hear you and you don't like to shout as that would be rude...as to the client, try to speak louder and if that doesn't work then tell the boss perhaps the client needs to have his hearing tested as everyone else hears you fine.

Maybe your boss is just making up the story that someone else has called him, as a way of making his point to you. But whatever, if your boss thinks it is a problem - then no matter what you think it is a problem for you. SO - might be better to try and address the problem - by trying to raise your volume - or making sure the mouthpiece is in front of your mouth. Your boss is the ultimate judge of whether you are the right person for the job - so it pays to listen to his views.

sometimes you can get a bad connection, I was talking to my mom last night and could barely hear her, because it was raining really hard out in my town, and so I retried the call and I could hear her perfectly fine. Phones suck, and if they keep complaining just blame it all on the customers phone connection.

If two people complain that you don't speak up, perhaps you aren't really speaking up much? I don't know, sometimes it happens where people think they're loud enough but they really aren't.

Either way, just speak up. Not worth getting your feathers ruffled. Be glad it's the ONLY complaint you've recieved instead of something WAY nastier.

spell your name is they can't 'hear' you - and say "I'm sorry, all I can hear is happy children!" with a cheery voice when you can't hear him. Even if you can, you can say that and maybe he will realize that is why he can't hear YOU.

rip one in the phone, i'll guarantee he'll hear it. then he can't deny that he really can hear you.

i know a girl who is asian and speaks naturally speak soft, she is a receptionist at a doctors office and deals with problems like this, you can either speak louder, find another job, when you speak to your boss speak so that he can hear you and if he calls on the cell phone with music and everything just say some off hand comment like " having fun " or " whats going on " something so that it might direct his attention to the fact that his end of the phone is a little noisy. some people are a little ignorant of their own situation. hope this helps:)
