What is an experience you've had with racism and how did you handle it?

we had a subsitute teacher. she actually called a black student a cotton picker. he didn't do anything. (there wasn't much he could do, he should have reported her though). she made a comment towards me and I don't remember what it was but she was basically saying she thought I was hispanic. my mom is from Brazil and my dad is half Italian/half Egyptian, I'm tan so I guess that's why she thought that. Anyway, I had forgotten my history book and she wouldn't let me get it (even though she had just let a white boy go to get a drink and that wasn't even a necessity). I simply asked "Can I go to my locker and get my book?" I told her "how am I supposed to do my work if I don't have my book?" and she said "that's your problem." so I got up and left, went to my locker to get my book. I came back and acted like she wasn't there the whole period. she had reported me for insuboardination. she said I was disrepsectful and rude just because I didn't kiss her a s s. Anyway, I ended up getting her

liscence suspended by talking about the comment she made when I had to sit down and talk about it with her and the principal. not much, but as long as it made a difference.
What about you?

Holy hell, I don't think there has ever been a time that I have ever been called a cotton picker (yes I'm Black). If that had occurred, I would have made that teacher cry, seriously. I don't take that crap from anyone, teacher, boss, nobody. Anyway, what you did was right, seeing as how your needs were more important than some kid getting a drink of water. People like that need to be ignored, because their ignorance shouldn't affect how we live our lives.

I did have a bit of a bad experience with racism once, some White kid used the n-word with me(I mean the one that ends with an "r") and well, needless to say, I was infuriated, but something inside of me told me to ignore him. Forget and move on. Don't let people insult you without them having to pay for it.

well there was this guy that would away say what a dumb mexican i was and i got really mad and ended up being the one that came off as a asshole and now i know just to forget dumbasses like that and walk away and hope that someone else will teach them there lesson

I have experienced several bouts of racism but I don't let it get to me. There will always be restraints in life and it is one's duty to ensure that such obstacles do not block their paths towards their goal(s).

Somebody I dated called me the n-word when I broke it off with him. He said it like ten times back to back. I handled it by resorting to physical violence and he responded by sending me Fender Strat as a peace offering.

Finding out that America is a Eurocentric country is the most perplexing experience I've been having with racism, and I don't know how to deal except "fight the power."

Back in the mid 70s when Angola and Mozambique fell, the natives were killling and raping the Whites there. It was horrible. I happened to mention this to my Spanish teacher, who was black. She went ballistic and said "Your people have held me in chains for over 200 years!" I said to her 'I doubt you've ever even been in hand cuffs, so forget about the chains. Secondly, you are just barely pushing 50 ( I knew she was only 35), so don't give me 200 years." I then left her class, went to the principal, told him the story, and got transferred out of her classs.
