How long does it take to charge & convict someone for abuse?

My 13 year old Goddaughter recently told her mother that her boyfriend (who is 4 years older) has been hitting her. I'm really shocked and want to help out with this as much as I can. I was told by someone that since she's a minor and I have no blood relations to her.. i cannot do anything. I have a feeling her mother isn't going to handle this correctly and I'd like to talk to a lawyer. How long would a situation like this take and what would the charge be called?

A lawyer would help in that they would do a lot of the running around for you but unless you are financially well off it might be easier to do your own running around.

If the mother does not proceed the first thing you'd do is go to the police or to child protective services and make a report. After that they will handle the rest of it.

Trials take some time. It is hard to say how long but anywhere from 3-6 months to over a year. The child though will be protected immediately.
