Do I have to be an "alcoholic" for my whole life even if I don't drink? |
Two years ago I received an MIP. As a result, I had to attend AA meetings and do an alcohol education program. At AA, they told me I had the disease of alcoholism. They said that I will never not be addicted to alcohol and could only be "in recovery"--I would never be cured. They also said I needed to go to AA for life. Even if I didn't drink alcohol, without meetings, I would only be a "dry drunk." They said I would pass the gene onto my children. Why can't I go on with my life and not be called an "alcoholic."? I don't drink! I don't want to go to AA. I would rather focus on school work and do fun hobbies like playing tennis. Ignore them. You are fine. They are nuts. As a former alcoholic myself, who was an AA member for a long time, I can tell you that you have no idea how deep the nuttiness runs in AA, nor do you need to find out. Go live your life and forget about them. If you got an MIP, and they call you an alcoholic then there is a problem with them. Getting busted with alcohol as a minor doesn't make you an alcoholic, it just makes you not as good at hiding your underage drinking as some. Tell them to f*ck off. The AA is a religious organisation that is full of sh*t and lies about alcoholism being a 'disease'. It's NOT a disease. If you aren't drinking then move on. dont worry about them. you've recovered from something it sounds like you barely even ever had. you wont pass it onto your kids because you dont drink! right! keep on enjoying life and have fun! |
