Puppy weaned too soon Need tips?

I got a puppy as a gift a week ago and so far it has been to the hospital 2x already. It gets hyperglycemia. I realized after talking with the dr. that the puppy was weaned too soon and need to be taken back to its mother OR do a 3 hour feeding 24 hours a day with puppy milk. Realizing the best choice I first tried calling the breeder and told her the problems and she just said that the pup was already weaned weeks ago (the puppy is now 7 weeks) and that the mother and pup may not take to each other now so to just give it honey to get it out of its state. Basically-no help from breeder now. I am too attached to this puppy to see it go thru health/behavioral probs or even death. I guess I am going to try to step in as its adopted pup mom and try my best. Any advice???!! Like how many times should I feed it? Any good ideas on milk, keeping it warm, bonding, other tips on handling..

The vet should have told you this, but if the puppy gets hypoglycemic, rub a bit of corn syrup on his gums and get him to the vet to be put on IV.

As for feeding him, follow the vet's instructions - every 3 hours and instructions for preparing formula should be on the package.

Hold the puppy upright (as if he were standing). Hold him securely under the stomach and chest. Open his mouth with the tip of your finger, put the nipple of the bottle in his mouth and hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle so he doesn't swallow air. Keep a bit of tension to encourage him to suck.

At his age, you need to offer him fresh water and teach him to drink. You can teach him to eat as well by offering him a good quality dry puppy food moistened with a bit of warm water to make a gruel. (Gradually decrease the water as he learns to eat.) Put it in a flat dish, dip your finger in it and let him lick it off. Then you bring your finger closer to the dish so he'll start to lick it from there.

Bonding will happen naturally with all the time you're spending keeping him alive. As for handling, keep him warm, keep him away from any other dogs or anywhere dogs go until he's had his shots. Then treat him like you would any other puppy - training, socializing, playing, grooming. You'll do just fine!

The youngest a puppy should be given away is 6 weeks old. I would try getting a syringe and put warm milk in it to feed it. Maybe you can contact another breeder and find out how often pups feed and then try feeding them that much.

You should report this breeder to someone. That is horrible to get rid of a puppy that early. If the truth be known, they were probably just trying to hurry and get rid of them without any thought to their well being.

I like everyone else's answers...they are very helpful...(Im sort of having the same problem but not as bad...my dog isnt sick) I thought I should let you know that at the pet store there are special puppy formula type of milks so that you dont have to give them cow dairy.

A lot of people use honey for sick dogs but I have read conflicting advice about doing that. I would not give the puppy any dairy. Dogs don't digest the lactose thoroughly and this can cause problems. I would get some milk replacement especially for puppies. Once the puppy is eating continue using the milk replacement to make a gruel out of her puppy food and then slowly reduce the amount of formula and increase the amount of kibble.

Once you are out of the woods on keeping her hydrated and nourished you'll need to do a lot of reading on dog behavior. I really like Patricia McConnell's books. When she has all of her vaccines I would enroll her in a puppy obedience class to help with socialization.
