Do You Understand This?

I am completely baffled by this double standard that is and has been in place between my younger brother and I for years. Of course it's common knowledge that parents are generally more permissive with their male children as opposed to their female children, and I was told something the other night that confirms such.

About two months ago told my mother that I was pregnant. Well, even though I have a job and earn a steady income (complete with benefits), have been with a wonderful man for 6 years, live with him, and am 23 years of age, my mom acted as if it was the end of the world. She later told me that if my younger brother had called her with news that he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant, she would have been able to handle that better because he's a guy. At this point in time, he's not in the most desirable position to get anyone pregnant as he is still in college and has no permanent job. So, why is it bad when I get pregnant but not so if he got some female pregnant?

To her its the end of the world because your not married.If it had been your brother everyone would blame his girlfriend for not using birth control.Your mother is embarrassed because your not married and she doesn't want to brag to her friends about a grandchild first before a wedding.Is she old fashion????

Parents expect their daughters to be ladies and getting pregnant out of wedlock is not being a lady. Yes, it is a double standard because they are more accepting if their son got someone pregnant out of wedlock. Not sure why. Do the right thing and get married and show your mom what a wonderful lady you are and what a great mother you are going to be.

I've got to be honest, I'm as lost as you are on this one. I think your moms just giving you the emotional response as opposed to the practical response.
