Injured rabbit trapped under my kitchen cabinets... anyone know how to handle this? |
I'll try to make this long story short. My two cats got out the front door this morning, caught (and possibly injured) a small bunny rabbit, and brought him home. We managed to get the cats to drop the poor thing, but he got spooked and ran into my kitchen. We have counters that run along two walls and meet in the corner, there is a small hole under the ledge of the cabinet that leads into a small space, about 1.5 feet by 2.5 feet or so. The rabbit found the hole and got through before we could catch him. We took a picture through the hole, the rabbit is alive but all the way in the corner and we can't reach him. Called animal control, they can't do anything unless we rip a hole in the counter, which is a small problem because we rent. Before we ask maintence to do this we're hoping there's a simpler way to get him out without injuring the little guy further. If you have experienced something similar or have any suggestions we would really appreciate it. Thank you!! :) Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I took a small carrot and cut it into small shavings, which I've left outside the hole. And the cats are trapped upstairs, so they can't get anywhere near him. I guess I'll just sit it out. Thank you also to the person who mentioned that animal control might destroy him, I certainly don't want that... as long as he's not terribly injured I'm hoping I can release him outside and he'll be okay. I guess I'll see when (if?) he comes out. Thanks! :) Being a young animal lover, I've had a few experiences like this. If you have access to hay, pellets vegetables (doesn't have to be carrots) set them out near the hole in the cabinet inside a cardboard box. Watch the box carefully and keep the cats away. When and if the rabbit comes out, pick up the box once the rabbit is eating. Have a blanket handy and cover the box. After that you can do whatever you'd like. Warning though, animal control will probably destroy the animal. Do this in daylight: Keep the cats out of the kitchen and place some rabbity food (lettuce, carrots etc) in the kitchen as far from the entry hole and as close to the back door as possible. Leave the outside door open and, if the rabbit is mobile, the food should entice it out. Then (hopefully) it will see the open door and escape. The only thing i can think of is to try to coax him out using food and keep the cats out of the kitchen. The best thing to do though is to have animal control handle it. Maybe suggest using a humane trap instead of moving the cabinets. |
