Neighbors don't pay, I get shut off?

I live in an originally single family home that was converted to a duplex. We get along very well with our neighbors, and don't want to strain that relationship in any way.

My gas meter (which is right next to theirs at the front of the house) has been mistakenly pinned for non-payment 4 times in the past year. For some reason, the gas company keeps pinning our meter instead of my neighbor's (who are admittingly having a proplem keeping up with the heat bills accrued over the winter). I took a freezing cold shower AGAIN this morning from my heat being mistakenly shut off instead of theirs.

How do I handle this situation? I've labled the meters, but that doesn't matter (I don't think they read them) and the gas company simply apologizes for the mistake when I call. The lines aren't crossed or anything. Do I let my neighbors know what's been happening? Or do I keep it between me and the incompatant gas people?

Leave the neighbor out of it.

You must confront the gas company-in person, and threaten to file a law suit if it happens again
Get your facts and papers together and pay them a visit-in person.
All those meters are identifiable by the gas company personnel-it is just pure negligence on their part. Point that out to them.
You don't have to get ugly- but there is no need to be polite either.

It's not the neighbors' fault. Look at your next gas bill. There should be a statement on there somewhere, that explains what to do if you have a problem with your service. Not the customer service number, but a regulatory agency that handles problems.

I'm almost certain that this information is required to be included on every paper or electronic statement that is mailed for utilities and cable TV. It is usually somewhere in the fine print or in a disclaimer. Sometimes it is on the back.

Call the gas company and politely let them know that if this happens one more time you're going to have to contact the regulatory agency and file a formal complaint because there is obviously a problem that they are not able to handle internally.

This is something to keep taking up with the gas company. Your neighbors are having trouble paying their bill, and that's not going to change even if you tell them what's going on. I definitely would complain to the gas company, especially after 4 times! I would threaten a lawsuit. Keep a good account of what's happening! (Perhaps put the correct address on the meter, too?
