And then I read that witnesses are not going to be allowed to be anonymous, as it is unfair on the defendant, which means 1000's of people will get away with yet more crimes as witnesses will fail to come forward

You cannot turn around and say to someone 'yes, you're equally qualified but I'm giving it to this person because they're female/black/Asian. It's utter rubbish.
Jobs should be, in the first instance, dished out on terms of suitability for the role. If that doesn't split candidates, it goes to how well that person will fit in with those already working there. If all else fails, it should go to what the interviewer thinks of you as a person.
There is no place in the modern workplace for saying ANYONE should get preferential treatment. It should be a completely level field no matter what your background is.
As for the Law Lords, saying witnesses will have to have their identities disclosed to the defence team is complete, utter, boneheaded stupidity, proving that those who serve justice in this country are not even remotely in touch with the people they judge.
Normally I find questions like this are in some way over the top; on this occasion I find I'm in complete agreement. The time really is coming for serious political change. Politicians and judges make laws for themselves and their "friends" producing massive inequality in this country and we are all sick of it.
The Government obviously predicted the UK population's unrest and made it illegal to demonstrate in the area around parliament.

It's not that this labour government is corrupt, both labour and conservative are self selving and are tyranical towards the public they are supposed to serve.
Labour has done all of this law changing in an atmosphere of "feel-good". Credit lending was increased under Blair to enable the feel-good factor to take place. The sign that it was a success was the lowest turnouts in history for elections. Political apathy has caused this and we are all at fault.

For years standards have been lowered to meet quotas of ethnic minority in many jobs now it will only get worse.
If they are good enough they should get the job on merit. Too many have already been given jobs because of their race or religion.
as for anonymous witness statements - so no black gangsters will ever be convicted then - as these gangsta gang members and their families openly intimidate potential witnesses. Absolute lunacy. I agree that these measures need further scrutiny but I'm not necessarily against them, in principle.
As for your "Positive Discrimination" complaint: reverse discrimination has been an issue to rear its ugly head, repeatedly, in the U.S. The bottom line is that, all else being equal, a SUBJECTIVE decision has to be made SOMEWHERE when there's no clear cut choice.
One should not be subject to law suits every time one makes such a decision. Life is not indiscriminate, equal or fair. Sometimes wrong choices are made. A pattern of wrong choices is what really matters.
This principle also applies to crimes and accusers. If accusers are granted anonymity, what's to stop somebody with a grudge from making false or spurious accusations? Isn't a safeguard necessary in this respect?
When I told my ex-wife I wanted a divorce and was leaving her, she called the police and said I assaulted her. Fortunately, the police were smart enough to expose her lie. But without protection from biases, such as, "big men are more culpable than little, crying, women" or "women need more of a break than men" -- what chance do I have against a tearful, little, woman . . . or a workmate who plays the "discrimination card"?
The justice system can't play favorites. Every case needs to be judged individually. How would you like to be convicted based on the prevailing prejudices of "normal" society? point 2 this is a tough one cos if witnesses can remain totally anonymous then it is easy for the police & prosecutors to use stooges to get a conviction ( & dont say they would'nt cos they already stretch the law to breaking point & beyond ) & if they are to remain anonemous then how can the defence cross examin them, no background, no character witnesses (as they would have to be anonamous)in fact no proof they are who thay say they are

In answer to your question Paul this country is getting madder by the week. The ruling against anonymous witness testimony in particular is beyond belief. I'll just keep on doing the lottery, maybe one day I can escape, lol. How can we be patriotic and die for our country when London schools have 50 different languages?

The news story, should you bother to read it, suggests that where candidates are equal in all other respects, gender or ethnic background may be used to make the workforce more representative. This may discriminate in favour or against males, females, whites, blacks.
Personally speaking, I've always found that being a white male gave me a massive advantage in nearly all situations, anyway.
2. It's the law. Anonymity of witnesses cannot be guaranteed. So, what are the government going to do about it? Introduce emergency legislation to change that law, before thousands of trials do fall because of witness intimidation. A loophole has been found, and it's being addressed.
