When I went to pick up my belongings from the police station, he is an officer by the way, we spoke for a while but I noticed a ring on his finger, unsure if its a wedding ring or not. I was going to attempt to call his office to ask for an update on a report. He seemed attracted to me but didn't approach me in that sense. Should I approach him by asking him if he's married? or would it be too forward to ask him out for a coffee?

No, ring probably means married (you didn't say which finger we have to assume) and you met him once and was a little attracted to him. Keep if professional, if it's a report you want, don't ask him out to coffee too.

On the basis that the ring is on the I am Married finger, I would think he is but of course he may not be, so the best thing is do not ask but make a statement. You are married, how does you wife put up with you being a police officer. Then you will know what to do.

He might be widowed.
I would say try and if you find out he is married stop.
But if he isn't and he is interested it could be a start to something good.

Policeman are not supposed to proposition those that they encounter on the job, so he probably won't and you probably shouldn't.
