Reporting possible hit & run?

I made a turn yesterday, from a 2 lane onto a 3 lane road. The car next to me (half car length behind) made the turn too wide, & I made the turn too tight. Our cars bumped lightly. I looked back and saw that their side mirror was pushed in. They were behind me and to the right, so probably got my plates, but I couldn't get theirs. I pulled over to the left (right 2 lanes fed into a freeway), but they didn't stop. There was no damage to my car. I called the police and the lady said that since there was no damage to my car, they didn't stop, I had no info on the other car (other than it was a black Prius), and that any report filed with the police would get auto forwarded to my insurance (affect my rates), she highly recommended that I didn't file a report.

She talked me out of it, but today, I'm thinking about it again, and I'm worried that I'll get charged with a hit & run. Should I file anyway? To the police? The insurance? Both? Neither? Does it matter I waited a day or 2 to report?

Write down the police officer's name. That way, if she does file a report, you can say who you spoke to on which date to show that you didn't hit and run.

Besides, it was the other lady that ran, so if she reports it, she could get into trouble for leaving the scene of an accident.

I wouldn't worry about it though, just take not of the date you called the police and who you spoke to. Maybe take some pictures of your car to show there's not damage?

if no one was injured and if police was okay with just leaving it alone then you cannot get a hit and run charge. I would not worry about it. plus you did not hit and run , you hit and then called and then left, but only after she said everything is okay.

plus its obvious that the other person didnt care, otherwise they would have pulled over, they probably didnt have insurance or a license. Good luck

Report it ASAP to both police and insurance. Sometimes failure to report will cast a shadow of guilt on you whether or not you were in the wrong. Failure to report it is definitely wrong, and could cause severe repercussions. If in doubt, consult an attorney ASAP.

File to both the police and to your insurance company. This way the very LEAST of your troubles will be that your rates (MAY) go up. People who buy insurance and then don't use it because their rates MAY go up may as well not buy insurance in the first place.
