What should my stepchildren call me? |
I am getting married in June to a guy that has a 2 year old son. I have been in this boys life since he was 9 mos old and have been there just as much as Dad. Since he has known me this long and we are getting married I think I should go by another name other than my first name. If I am going to take this child in my home and care for him (which I look forward to so much) what names could he call me? I don't want to be called Mom but something very similar because I am accepting his as a son and i feel he should accept me and I should be viewed as a mother figure. If you could please help my fiance and I come up with some names. Thank you This is a very difficult situation. I have a step-mother and a step-father. Both have been in my life since i was little. I was Never and am still not comfortable calling them anything close to "mom or dad". I have always called them by their first names. I already have a mom and dad. I appreciate them both but at the same time they are not my biological parents. If my mom or dad ever divorced again from the spouses they are with they are still my mom and dad. The "step" parents are not. All i can say is that my step-mother tried to push me in to calling her something other than her first name and it caused alot of tension over the years. It only started to get better in the last 5 or 6 years (and Im 25..) and thats because she stopped pushing for it. It also caused alot of tension between her and my Mom. They can't even be in a room together and it makes it really difficult. I'm a divorce attorney - and please take my advice - if the real mother is in the child's life in any way shape or form - do not, I repeat, do not, choose a name that in any way comes close to "mom" (not mama, not mommie etc as they are all derrivitives of mom) I think you are right in not wanting to be called "mom" If this child has a mom that is still a part of his life, that could be a really bad thing for everyone involved. What does the child call you now? If he already has a name for you, it might be hard to get him to call you something else. I like "mizzel" thats cute. I've also heard of "mamu", which I think is also really adorable. I dont know what your first name is, but sometimes you can get cute nicknames from names. My grandma's name is marcella and we call her "marmar". |
