Dear Mayor Bronconnier
As a concerned citizen of Calgary, I am writing regarding the issue of homelessness and the urgent and growing need to address the problem in a considerable and meaningful way. Homelessness in Calgary has reached a crisis level, and the status quo is morally and economically unsustainable. In my opinion, this is one of the most important issues facing our city today.
In a city known as being both prosperous and progressive, it is intolerable for any member of our community to be homeless. Homelessness, or the treat of homelessness, affects individuals and families from every segment of our population. Living on the streets makes homeless people more vulnerable to abuse. The homeless have been brutally attacked with baseball bats, chains and many other dangerous weapons. For instance, just last week a homeless Ontario man who stepped off a bus seeking a new life in Calgary is comatose in hospital after attackers savagely beat him while he slept near a Greyhound depot. How can we just stand by and watch incidents like this occur right under our noses?
Homelessness is not cheap. Provincial taxpayers spend up to $40,000 annually per homeless person. That money is spent on police calls, hospital visits and other emergency social services. If there are approximately 4,000 homeless people in the calgary area, and if each person uses $40,000 in services, then Alberta taxpayers are spending $86.9 million a year just to help people living on the streets stay alive.
Housing them all would cost less than half that much money, and numerous studies show that people who live indoors go to jails and hospitals far less than people who live on the streets. The average Canadian spends only $11,200 a year on housing.
I would like to understand your position on homelessness and issues such as secondary suites, additional shelters, and affordable housing options. What are your intentions for addressing the problem and helping the thousands of Calgarians that do not have a place to call home?
Thank you for your time and consideration of this letter. Now, more than ever, the City of Calgary must show strong leadership and take action to ensure all citizens have access to safe, secure and affordable housing.
I look forward to receiving your response to these questions and concerns.
Sincerely,

Sondos Irhouma

Your address etc belong on the right right side at the top( might have been automatically move to left margin but in the letter it is right side)

Letter is wellthought out gramtically correct but a bit long and onerous. Shortening it and getting immediately to your point would be an advantage---the Mayor may get disgusted/bored/disinterested before you get the point & request across.

Remember he is running the city NOT YOU !

A topical heading might help him if he decides to refer this letter to some staff/committee for consideration.

Very good letter, and the fact that they are beaten is something that needs stopping. Send it, please :P
