Anybody have a dog that had an inguinal hernia?

I am considering adopting a puppy with one. She will need surgery to have it repaired. The lady at the shelter said that a vet could probably do it at the same time that she was getting spayed. I am going to call my vet tomorrow and discuss it, but I wanted to know if anyone had a dog that needed this surgery. Was the surgery very expensive? Was it difficult for the dog to recover? I have read up on it on the internet today and the surgery seems pretty straight forward but I wanted to have some additional input if possible. Thanks!

We did have a dog with it, and she did have it repaired when she was spayed. If I recall correctly, it costs about $100.00 extra. The recovery time and precautions were the same as they were for the spaying, and it turned out just fine. Good luck, and thanks for considering adopting,

I believe this is a very easy repair if it is done during the spay. It is no different, in terms of recovery, then recovering from the spay itself.

I'm not sure about the extra cost, but I can't imagine it being too much -- the dog is already down for the spay, and they are already working on that area, anyway!

I've had puppy people do this surgery in conjunction with spay/neuter, and have never heard any negative feedback.

Hope this helps.

Hernia's are more common them one might think! Inguinal hernia's are found in the groin area on the interior surface of the back leg.

The hernia needs to be repaired, unfortunately, if left untreated they can be a disaster waiting to happen! It is HIGHLY recommended to have the hernia repair done at the same time as spaying/neutering. Your cutie will be under anesthetic anyways! Hernia repairs only take about 5-10 minutes longer then the actual spay itself. The procedure is quick!

Cost does depend on the severity and size of the hernia. You would be looking at anywhere from $75-$150 for a hernia repair at our hospital. When you call your veterinarian tomorrow, simply ask for an estimate.

Recovery is what we call insignificant. Meaning not too much different then the recovery from the actual elective spay procedure: 7-10 days of "rest", leash walking only (even if the yard is fenced, and you need to limit any strenuous activity. I would also be prepared to have your girl come home with an Elizabethan collar (lamp shade) and pain medication.

I wish you luck!
