I didn't know how long I had been sitting on the floor. It felt like I had been in the same position for hours but it couldn't have been more then ten minutes. Still I didn't want to get up. I didn't want to open the door and face this situation without a moment to think. I slowly stood up and walked to sink. I rinsed my face with cold water to wash away the dried tears. Then I placed the pregnancy test at the bottom of the trash can. I closed my eyes and tried to be calm. I didn't want to walk out there looking like a deer in headlights. I had to remain calm. I opened the door. Jade and Luke had settled into the living room watching an old rerun of "I love Lucy". I slowly walked around the old leather couch and sat between them.
"So" said Jade looking at me with question marks in her eyes
"It came out positive" I said
"Knew it " she said leaning back putting a hand full of skittles in her mouth.
"What are you gonna do" asked Luke with a look of concern across his face
"I honestly don't know" I replied. "I'm still getting over the shock of it."
I felt the tears trying to escape from my eyes. I fought hard not to let them but, I lost as they ran down my face.
"I'm scared" I said between small gasps for air. "I don't know what to do."
"Are you going to tell Blaine?" questioned Jade looking at me from the corner of her eye.
My heart started to beat faster I hadn't thought of that was I going to tell Blaine? What would he say? How would he react?
"I hadn't really thought of that" I said whipping away the tears from my damp face.
"Do you think he even has to know?"
"Of course he has to know its his kid too" said Luke "That wouldn't be fair to him what if he wants a part in this?"
I ignored Luke and turned my attention to the TV.
"Can we just drop it please" I asked
"Whatever" he replied crossing his arms
I leaned my head against the back of the couch. Maybe I should call Blaine. As much as I hated to admit it Luke had a point. It wouldn't be fair to keep this to myself. I closed my eyes and tried to go to sleep. After a few minutes I was still wide awake but, I kept my eyes closed hoping sleep would come.I suddenly felt an arm go around my shoulder. I knew it was Luke because the hands were big. That's all I needed I fell asleep peacefully in his embrace.
I felt a slight shaking of the floor and heard the deep rumble of the garage door. I lifted my shoulder from under Luke's arm and glanced at the clock. It was 6:47pm just about the time my mom usually arrived home from work . The three of us just stayed exactly where we were. We knew my mom was very observant and would be able to see through anything we thought was us "acting normal."
"Soleil!" she yelled, "Are you up there?"
"Yeah" I said "Jade and Luke are here too"
I heard her close the garage door and start walking up the endless flight of stairs.
"I think we better go" Luke whispered in my ear.
"Yeah that's a good idea" I replied
He and Jade slowly stood up and made their way to the door.
"I'll call you later" Jade whispered pausing for a second.
I heard them shut the door and walk down the gravel path, then a few seconds later slam the car doors, start the engine and drive away. I walked into the kitchen. My mom was leaning over the counter drinking a cup of water. She looked exhausted her blouse had numerous deep wrinkles and her feet looked swollen from standing in heels all day. She turned her face to look at me.
"Did I hear the front door close?" she asked
"Yeah Luke and Jade had to go"
Satisfied with my answer she turned her attention the leftovers in the fridge.
Over the past three years my mom and I had grown extremely close. Ever since my dad had died we had learned to comfort each other .That's what we did for each other give. I felt a deep pain and guilt for the news I was about to tell her.
I walked slowly across the kitchen until I was standing next to my mom who was leaning against the counter staring at the microwave. I crossed my arms and stared ahead.
"Whats wrong" she asked with a concerned look across her face.
"I'm afraid to tell you" I replied
"Sweetie why would you be scared to tell me anything? "We talk about everything"
"I'm not really scared of telling you" I said "I'm more afraid of disappointing you."
The microwave beeped, my mom leaned forward and pressed the button that opened the door. She took out the hot plate then opened the drawer to get a fork. She then walked over to kitchen table and sat in one of the chairs. I silently followed and sat next to her.
"Now, what is it that you wanted to tell me?" she asked putting a forkful of spaghetti in her mouth.
I got up and went to the bathroom. I looked in the trashcan for the empty pregnancy test box. I walked back to the kitchen holding the box behind my back. I sat back down in my chair and gently placed the box on the table in front of her. My mom stopped chewing. She stared at the box, then me, then back at the box. She put her forehead in the palm of her hand. She didn't say a word. She didn't even look at me, which just made me the silence all the more unbearable. We sat like that for eternity. Finally she got up from the table and went to her room. I stood up went to my room and slammed the door. I put "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in the DVD player and sat on my bed.
I was just at the part when Holly Golightly throws her wild party when I heard my mom open my door. She quietly walked over and sat next to me on the bed.
"When did you find out?" she asked in an even toned voice
"Just today" I replied
"You're not getting rid of it" she said
"I'd never really thought seriously of doing that" I said
"Do you plan to raise this child?"
"I don't know, I don't even want to be a parent" I replied with more anger in my voice then I'd meant.
"Its Blaine's" I added
"Have you called him yet"
"No"
I still didn't know what to do. As much as I hated to I would have to call him.
"Mom, am I disappointment?" I asked turning to face her.
"I wouldn't say that" she said
"Things happen, sure they don't always work out the way we plan or want to but, that doesn't make anyone a disappointment or bad person its makes you human."
She moved closer to me allowing me to rest my head on her shoulder.
"I love you mom" I said
"I know baby, I know" I think that you've written a really excellent and compelling story. You wrote it exactly right, in my opinion, to produce an exciting and suspenseful beginning, just the sort to capture your reader's attention. I found myself actually wanting to read it to discover what would happen. Reread it as there are a few minor errors in it, and then continue; I'd love to know where you mean to go with the plot. Good luck! Thanks for the Best Answer! I'll buy your book when it's published! Report It
No. It was pretty good actually. Just a few errors here and there. Reedit, and it'll be fine. how old are you if 10-15 exellent 15-40 kind of good 40-55 ewwwwwwwwww no it sucks
but i'm guessing exellent I think it's good. I like the way you use details, which enable the reader to actually feel like they're THERE. For example:
"I felt a slight shaking of the floor and heard the deep rumble of the garage door."
That makes it seem more dramatic... Rather than simply saying "Mom came home," or something like that, which would have been boring.
So good job! |
