Do Catholic Exorcisms have to be approved by the archdiocese?

I really enjoyed the show on the Discovery Channel called "A Haunting" I was wondering if anyone know anything more specific about how exactly priests preform exorcisms. Is it true that a Catholic priest would have to get approval from his archdiocese in order to move forward with an exorcism? And what types of preparations must be done by the priest before going through with the exorcism?

I would also be interested in hearing about anyone's personal account with an exorcist and or exorcism. Did it work?

Solemn exorcisms, yes; simple exorcisms, no.

In a basement storage space at my husband's workplace, a Ouija board, covered with a thick layer of dust, had been set up for at least as long as my husband worked for this company (about two years at the time). It creeped him out, so I suggested that he perform a simple exorcism (laypeople can perform simple exorcisms), just to make him feel a little better about the area. I gave him a little bottle of Holy water and a prayer for a simple exorcism. He performed the exorcism, sprinkled the Holy water, and left, not really expecting anything to happen. Within an hour, when he returned to the storage area to get an item he needed, a workman was there cleaning up and removing the Ouija board. My husband asked him about it, and the workman said that he had received a sudden phone call instructing him to clean up the area. Did the exorcism work, or was this just a remarkable coincidence? You be the judge.

You would certainly need higher approval for an exorcism, I've never met a priest that has done one.

Yes, far too many are a hoax and the Catholic church has professionals that can easily uncover a false joker...

Every Diocese has one, although he remains anonymous for obvious reasons.

Yes, a Catholic priest must have the approval from his archdiocese in order to perform an exorcism. The funny thing is a demon doesn't need the approval of the archdiocese in order to possess a person. How cool is that?!

Exorcisms rank right up there with unicorns and dragons...FAIRY TALES ALL.

Energies are everywhere. Prayer is essential, but you have to ask God to place the four protectors at each corner of your bed before you dream. My cousins were visited by demons, my dad was stalked by a dead man and I experience weird stuff that I don't even what to remember. It's like voodoo, if you don't believe it, it doesn't exist. Remember that Jesus said that it was faith that saved. So believe in the resurrection and your energy will be saved, but if you believe that you will come back as a rat, then God might grant you that wish. Watch out!

For reasons both ancient and modern, an exorcism (in terms of expunging a demonic obsession or possession) requires permission of the bishop. The ancient reason is that all other venues must be exhausted, and one need not unecessarily create undue fear by performing exorcisms unecessarily.

The modern reason is lawsuits. Exorcisms can be difficult processes, and if a person comes to harm or dies during one, litigation can be made against the Church.
