Urinary Tract Infection... again.?

I've gone to my doctor and been prescribed Bactrum(sp?). It didn't work so one day after work I went to the hospital, took a urine sample and was prescribed an antibiotic called Mylan. Neither of the two have worked. My doctor doubts that it has spread anywhere beyond my urinary tract. I am only 16 years old and have been getting UTI's for the past 2 years re-occurring. I am aware of all the methods to prevent UTI's but I still get them. Not to be too forward, but I wear 100% cotton underwear, urinate before and after sex, take Cranberry supplements, never wear pants that are too tight, etc.



Does anybody know what could be wrong or what I should do? =/

I do wipe from front to back and wash everything before and after sex. I do everything I can to avoid them and can't think of anything I'm doing wrong. I also drink plenty of water and cranberry juice.

Are you sure the antibiotic is named Mylan? That's the name of a pharmaceutical company, but probably not the actual name of the drug itself.
A good, older antibiotic for UTIs is Macrobid. You should go back to your doctor and tell him/her that your infection has not cleared up. Ask for or make an appointment with a urologist. There may be an anatomical reason why you're getting recurrent infections.

Not to be to forward :) but do you wipe yourself from front to back after peeing or having a bowel movement? Most UTIs are caused by ecoli, which indicates contamination from stool. Make sure that when you have sex (and I have to add you are very young to be having sex), you aren't allowing him to move from your back end to your front. Even if you don't have actual penetration from the back, the bacteria can be moved to the front, and that can lead to UTIs.

Are you taking bubble baths? That can cause irritation and UTIs. Have you changed soaps or laundry detergents? Are you using the same type of unscented toilet paper? My daughter can use only Dove soap and only Charmin tp or she gets recurrent UTIs.

It sounds as though you aren't totally getting rid of the infections. Be sure they are doing a urine culture after you complete the course of antibiotics to make sure the infection is gone.

you must be doing something wrong b/c every now and then i get them and i either take prescribed penicillin or drink alot of cranberry juice and it cures it right up.

You need to see your doctor again and let him know everything. It isn't normal to have them re-occurring for 2 years. When I first became sexually active I had a couple of infections that easily went away with an over the counter product called Ural. There could be something else going on...

I think maybe it would be good to have a complete physical. Sometimes people with weakened immunity get these repeatedly even though they do everything right. You are doing all the right things, so getting a physical would be a great place to start, just to make sure nothing else is going on with your immune system. Good luck.

Cranberry juice or supplements can help prevent but not treat UTI's.
Urinate immediately after sex, don't wait. I know this does tend to spoil the "mood" or "after glow".
Have your Dr. do a urine culture to find out what type of bacteria is actually causing the infection then he can prescribe an antibiotic that is more sensitive to the Bactria.

Add to the list to drink a glass of water before sex to make sure you wash out your urinary tract well during the "after" urination.
Make sure partner washes his hands and his equipment before sex. Wash yourself off with mild soap and water before and after. Avoid oral sex, a human mouth is very germy, same thing, wash out his mouth "before" toothpaste and mouthwash will do just fine.
And practice cleanliness "during", have partner not use more than one body opening on you without washing first, or even do that in the same session.
And, did you take the antibiotics correctly? Did you take All of them, and the correct # of hours apart that you were supposed to? Failure to comply with an antibiotic regimen can mean the infection is not going to be killed off, symptoms might not go away, or come right back. Bactim needs to be taken with a glass of water.

And if this goes on much longer, see a doctor, again. Recurrent infections are not good for the urinary tract, and can indeed spread to the kidneys.
And, ask what the germ is that is causing the infection. Certain germs are found in certain places on the body. If, for instance, the germ is E.coli, you have been infected with feces. And yes, that can happen by just wiping the wrong direction with toilet paper, or a case of the diarrhea can increase the risk of that.
