I don't know if they're necessary as in required, but the way my pastor has explained it is it's confessing your faith before men (people)

Alter calls (or alter servers) are men and men only!! The Latin churchs forbids it. I go to a latin Mass and the new "English Church" allows it which is forbidden by the Original.

I believe they should have them because you never know maybe someone is in need or wants to come to Christ and we need to give them an opportunity to be able to do it
