Auto Insurance Nonrenewal?

June 2006 my aunt was in town visiting and borrowed our car with permission for a 15 minute drive. She totalled our car and damaged another for $9000 in damages. Fast forward to Dec. 28, 2007...my 16 year old daughter passes her driver's test, so we call agent and add her to the policy. Today, Jan. 26th, we get a nonrenewal notice that the cause is listed as my aunt who crashed the cars being "undisclosed driver." She has not, will not, and has never lived with us. She lives in another state and we told the agent that! What do we do now? I filed a complaint with the state insurance board but now I have 1 1/2 months to see if any company will insure us! How do I get the "undisclosed driver" thing corrected?

Your insurance agent and insurance company are wrong. You are not obligated to notify your insurance agent of a driver not living at your address. The insurance followes the vehicle, not the driver. Get a quote from another agent (insurance company), disclose the accidents and the non renewal notice to the agent.The premium will go up because of the accidents. However, if the policy is written for 6 months, the premium should go down when the next 6 month policy is written.

Switch carriers. Don't spin your wheels on this issue. You won't be penalized by any other insurance company for your aunt's chargeable accident. Her accident will show on a C.L.U.E. report and will only affect her for 3 years, not you. Just shop around now for a new policy and once you find a better rate, ask that the new policy go into effect on the expiration of your current one. Make sure you get a homeowners ins. quote with the same company to get the multipolicy discount.
