When exactly do I get a business license?

I am starting a contracting service as an event photographer. I'm getting work mostly through promotion online and friends of friends, so the money is coming in slow. I'll probably make a grand from it this year. Do I already need a business license? Does that mean I will be expected to pay taxes next year on the business profits no matter how little they are? Just wondering if I should get the license now or wait until theres a steady inflow of cash.

Also, is it a problem if I only offer services four or five months out of the year? Does a business license mean you're in business always? Because its more of a summer project that I don't have much time for while I'm in college.

You absolutely need to be licensed. Go to your local city hall and find the forms.

If you get a license you can advertise and really get your service out there which would mean more income.A license means that you're always in business..not just for part of the year. It's really up to you.If you plan on only being in business part time and don't feel the need to advertise everywhere I would wait to get the license until it's a full time gig.
