What are the difficulties that your company faces in regards to Cisco's SMARTNET?

I have come to the realization that Cisco's business model for SMARTNET does not meet my needs. I would like to be able to have one SMARTNET contract for a number of devices over a lease period. And if I only use the services for half of the devices, I would like to roll over the remaining SMARTNET that was not used. Has anyone had similar issues and does anyone have any recommendations?

Smartnet is more akin to insurance. You could do this IF you bought spares and were willing to risk no software upgrades for devices - then if something went down you could replace it with a spare instead of calling TAC. But you can't say "OK cover everything, but if I don't place a call on everything, I want to roll the devices over to next year". It just des not work that way - I have never seen a vendor maintanence that did. Hope this helps.
