Starting a security company?

Can I provide personal security and protective services to companies without being one of their employees. i.e. have a company pay me say $100 a week to do patrol checks on their business after hours. I am a licesned police officer in Michigan and also have a CCW. Do I need an actual security license to do this.

Interestingly, Michigan has an exemption for "bodyguards", which as not required to be licensed unless they are also protecting property.

If you are an active law enforcement officer, and are working on off-duty assignments through your agency or union, you generally don't need to be licensed as a security officer. But if you are doing this on your own, you would be considered to be operating a security agency and would need to be licensed. In most cases, there would also be requirements for bonds and/or insurance.
