How much should it cost to replace an outdoor air conditioner's motor?

I had a guy come out and he was done in less than 45 minutes. The motor has 1/3 HP, 1075 RPM's, 208-230 Volts. I was charged $545 for parts and labor and $65 for the service call for a total of $610. Please tell me this is about right, because I was a little shocked at the total, but I was so desperate w/out air. I know the part was maybe $100, but is there that much of a mark-up in this business?

I think it is a little high but only like $100 at most, if that, depending on the motor used.

Yes mark up on parts is at least 100% from wholesale. And a good condenser motor I'm not shocked at $150-$200 marked up to $300-$400. But our labor would be at least triple. Our trip out is $85 for an estimate. Total plus trip for a condenser motor would be at least $225.

And we operated by "book" prices meaning they are predetermined. It is based on average time for the repair not actual time spent.

So I think you got a real deal on labor but overcharged on parts. But there are tax reasons some companies do this since taxes on "Goods and Services" (parts vs. labor) are reported separately and taxed separately.

Yes, it is a lot of money but I don't think the total is so terribly out of line from what most companies would charge.

The out-door a.c. condensing unit has two motors. One spins the fan blade and the other turns the compressor pump. I suspect that the fan motor failed given the' 1/3 h.p ' specifics. A very generic, to spin the fan, motor with built-in mounting adjustability, can be had for $30. The $65 dollar service call should include the Remove and Replace of that easy fix. The part mark-up is around 100% so, the final bill should be summerized as follows- $65+$60 to $80 (for part) = $135-$140 total! In very odd cercumstances, the technition may have to add another hour of labor. This will bring the total bill up to perhaps a maximum of $210 . You have much to be concerned about your bill!

Yes it sounds very high.
The fan motor shouldn't have been more than $200.00 -$300.00 with a capacitor and labor between $65-$100.
Try calling the co. and question the charges.
Maybe the guy made a mistake.
It depends on how there charges are broke down.
Could be some sort of flat rate pricing where they include things into a basic part replacement like loss of inventory, unbillable time and other Co. losses.
Not much you can do about the charges now if they didn't make a mistake.
Just remember not to call them next time and let other people know.
I myself cannot justify charging a customer for more than what was needed for their particular repair.
If their condenser fan motor was difficult and took more time for the repair because of job conditions ( rusted or broken mountings etc.) they should have to pay for whatever it took. And likewise if it was easily replaced the charge should be accordingly.
I live in a small town where if you overcharge someone it will get around fast and you will be out of business.

i just replaced fan and motor for a goodman and charged 260 total. you were taken badly. my price was doubling what i paid for the part and 85 service and labor.

Is this motor a compressor or the condenser fan motor? Sounds like $545.00 is too much for a condenser fan motor. If it is a compressor motor, price must be reasonable enough.

If the motor is all He replaced, seems pretty steep. Motor cost him about $125.00. Unless it had special mounts etc. then maybe $250.00. Service call is good price.

1/3 HP.MOTOR COST $80 TO $100
SO $610 IS WAY TOO MUCH.

summer time hot weather you are desperate nad he will never se you again ..you were ripped.
