What factors are most important when considering interest in a (black) sorority?

i'm interested in a particular bglo, have done my research and love what the sorority stands for but have spent sometime with some of the current members and can't see myself fitting in with them if I we're to be chosen. Should I sacrifice my interest for a sorority simply because I don't think I will fit in with the cuurent members (although I believe in everything the sorority stands for).


There's another sorority I am now interested in only after seeing how the members act on campus because they are friendly, are involved in campus, do a lot of community service and out of all the black sororities on campus they seem to have a great sisterhood. Is that more important when considering interest in an organization?

i know this is a bit long and confusing but I didn't want to put the names of the organizations and put my business out there too much. I would really appreciate some advice though

My advice is follow what's in your heart. I have seen too many people that decided to join another org only because they didn't like the the members of the sorority they REALLY wanted to join on their campus. Although some were happy with their decision in switching sororities, most of them in the long run ended up regretting that decision. What you need to realize is college is only for 4 years,,,,but membership in any of of these organization is a lifetime commitment.

Follow your heart and if you do you will not regret your decision...I would never suggest joining an org simply because of how the members act of campus. I would join because after doing much research, I realize it is the best org for me.

Hi! I think your question pertains to other than black sororities too. I'll share with you that when I was a freshman and went through the organized rush, at first I was sure which houses I wanted/was willing to consider. To make a long story short, I followed my heart at the very last minute and put a so called "mediocre" sorority as my first choice and put the pretty girl sorority second. Guess what? A bunch of other freshman women did the same as me and our pledge class DOUBLED the size of our sorority and we were all happy with each other. And the irony is....our "mediocre" sorority was considered first rate by the end of that school year.

My advice is to follow your heart, whether it's deciding what sorority to join, what major to pursue, what guy to date etc.

There is one thing i do have to say. Sometimes sororities act differently around "potential" members. They put up a front about how they really act. They could be really chilled, organized and friendly but when you get into the sorority they can completely change.

If i were to give you the best advice, i would go where you feel the most comfortable. Don't rush into anything. Sororities are a Lifelong commitment. I mean lifelong. You have to not only dedicate your time, money and lifestyle but yourself as a person. Although some people don't always do that, by following the rituals and guides set down that is what you are molding to do.

Sororities have a great benefit, you get more involved on campus, with other organizations, and you network yourself into the job market. It doesn't matter which one you pick... because any greek organization can give you the same opportunity.

So my response for you is to: See how much money you will have to put in, how much time they require you to put in with meetings, weekly activities, if you can handle a job, class and the lifestyle... etc. The sorority that you choose will fall into your lap. If you hang out with the members before you choose that will also give you an idea of what the commitment is.

Warning: just because you read the website, catalog or what ever and loved what they stand for does not mean they live up to it.

Two things come to mind.

1) All sororities no matter if they are NPC, NPHC or MCGC are larger than the chapter you are seeking membership in. There are members who share a bond with you around the globe just because you are members of the same organization.

2) If you are willing to sacrifice your interest because of what your current impression is of them then I'd venture to say your interest is more in being in an organization than that org in particular. On the outside looking in and not being privy to the inner workings of an organization you don't really know if you'd fit in or not.

I definitely agree with the other two ladies. I too had an issue when deciding because of what my friends wanted to do and also because people were suggesting that I do what I "look" like or "act" like. If your friends are real they will still be your friends no matter what you pick.Also: Don't compromise who you are as individual to fit it. Once I did that I realized that everything else seem cookie cutter and that I would have to uphold this "look" and "act" for every. I soon narrowed it down and made my choice.

Now I couldnt be happier! Alot people question why ALL the time not only cuz I didn't pick what they expected but also because my chapter is slightly crazy lol

Good luck and take all the things that I and the other two ladies said into consideration. Time, money, type of community service and compatibility.
