How do I continue the family business?

My father owns a small, one-man tree service operation, has a dump truck, chipper, chainsaws, stumpgrinder, etc., and is looking to retire soon. I've worked with him off and on when he's needed me and now I have the choice of continuing the business. From an entrepreneurial standpoint, I know that the opportunity to have a small, ready to go business in your hands is gold, but I need to know how to turn things bigger.
Specifically, what do I need to do to expand the business into an actual company? Hiring employees? Advertising? Anything else?

I disagree with the answer above me. I think there will always be a market for your type of work. Removing trees is a dangerous business and most people don't own the correct equipment even in rural areas like where I live.

All you need to grow your business is more clients. Has your dad been advertising? I would need to know your area before I could suggest the type of advertising that would work best.

As you get more clients you will need to hire and train workers. Then as your business continues to grow you will need more equipment and more employees.

If you grow slowly you will learn what you need to know to keep it growing.

First you need to know the business inside and out.......then get a good accountant and find out how much it will cost to expand the business.......then find out if you can afford it........the service market is tanked......people are getting laid off........folks will cut their own lawn and put their saving in their gas tank........you need to find out if there is a market for your expansion......
