Do business logos have to be copyrighted?

i am going to work for a social service organization, and they have no business cards, no logo...i am being tasked with creating something for them to use....can I use any logo I want or does do copyright infringment laws apply?

If there is no copyright on the logo you can use it. If you want sole ownership of the logo, you can have it copyrighted. Look at small businesses. Ask them where they got their cards from. Or use something simple like lines or squares.

Everybody copyrights their LOGO because if you make it famous you don't want someone to steal your thunder, your crowd, and your money; do you?
If it is a logo and you use it without permission you will get sued if they find out about it.

Yes you must protect the logo. I believe the correct term is Trade Mark (tm), (sm) Service Mark or (r) Registered. You will see these little circles next to all logos just take a look.
