How to Build up a client base for...?

I am just about to graduate and am looking at getting a job as an independent contractor for a financial services company. I would be building relationships and conducting business with my own clients. What I am wondering is how to begin and build a customer base in this industry? Any help would be much appreciated. Even if you have a list of great leads unless you learn how to properly work them you will starve. I have read plenty of books and I found this one the most helpful.
