Basically...

A service business provides a service for pay. This would include businesses like accountants, lawyers, physicians, janitorial, yard care, restaurants, equipment repair, and Yahoo. Service businesses usually have a focus of people interacting with people.Restaurants qualify because eventhough they deal with food, their main focus is preparation and serving the food.

A marginal business is a business that takes in enough money to pay its bills but doesn't make a profit or makes a very small profit. It's marginal because it is not able to save up money in case of business problems. Unexpected expenses can ruin this type of business. Also, when you invest money in a business, you should be able to earn a return on your money, (like when you put money in the bank and the bank pays you interest, the interest is a 'return' on your savings.) Marginal businesses are unable to earn returns so they have trouble attracting investors.

A manufacturing business makes things. It uses tools and labor to make a product. Usually it takes raw materials and changes them into a finished product. Examples of this type of business would be found in factories, artists studios, steel mills, and so on. Companies that are manufacturing companies are Ford motors, Boeing, and Dell.

There are exceptions to these categories because some businesses do a little of more than one thing. In that case, the type of company is usually determined by what brings in the most revenue.
