Do I need a tax number?

I'm starting a business as the sole proprietor and the only employee in NY. It's in the service industry.

As a Sole Proprietor you are only required to get an EIN if you have employees. However, you still can get one if you wish and since you'd have to use your SSN for business purposes without an EIN, I'd strongly recommend that you get an EIN and use that for business purposes where a Tax ID is required. If an EIN is compromised it's pretty simple to cancel it and get a new one. Replacing a compromised SSN is nearly impossible except in the most extreme cases so you really DON'T want to use your SSN for business purposes.

If it is service oriented then you have to get it service tax registration. It is complusory if your turnover cross 10 laksh per annum

No. You only need a tax number if you have employees. Your SSN should be all you need.

However, you may need to get a sales tax ID number from NYS depending on the service that you provide.
