Is tipping $3 for a $36 haircut too much, too little, or just right?

I was just reading an article with the headline "Tip-dependent workers feeling the slump
The economic downturn has cash-strapped customers leaving less."
at http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/l... and was wondering, have I been tipping right for the good service I get from my hairstylist?
I also leave $1 for the lady who washes my hair. Is that a correct tip?

Good for you for caring enough to get a decent hair cut and going to the trouble of trying to find out if this is enough!

I'd suggest that you tuck a couple of dollars towards the shampoo lady. Think about how her back feels at the end of the day making minimum wage! I never leave less than a $5 tip for my hairstylist. Around the holidays, you might want to leave her a $20 if she's your regular hairstylist.

$1 for the shampoo person is correct. $3 of 36 is 8%. We usually tip 10% to 15% to a waitress to start. A hair cut is a service. Therefore 10% to 15% would be a good place to start. For that type of service 20% would be great to start at.

Not to be picky LOL but $4 would have been 11%. So you did okay, but that is a rule to consider next time.

i think 20% is a good tip ,cause they work hard and long hours. and they deal with all walks of life, so if you get what you want from your hair stylist everytime you get your hair done then the tip is showing the styist how you feel . with no words said the styist will always take good care of you,and for the person who washes your hair i can't help you with because my styist does mine.
