Does anyone run a local graphic design business?

I am skilled in graphic design and other areas of artwork after many years of study up to university level, and I am interested in small time design as it would not be an ideal full time career for me.
Has anyone took on this idea and found it successful? I aim to target my services to other business such as salons and takeaways etc.
Any advice?

Takes alot of work but yes one can run a boutique graphic design marketing shop. If it doesn't have to be full time it's even easier!

You can start finding clients by looking at craigslist.org in two placces: 1 - look in jobs: art/media/design and 2 - look in gigs: creative - also post your nice services in the services: creative section every now and then when business is slow.

Try to find a small business networking group to get the name of your shop into small businesses minds. I market my business to the companies I use (dry cleaner, barber, deli, church, etc).

If you don't have busniess cards already make some (that match your resume and web portfolio, if you don't have those up and running yet get cracking. :)

Hand your cards out like a crazy person!! You never know when someone will need a designer and . . .
