Why cant we build support for the fair tax? Is it so Wrong?

In place of all current federal taxes, the FairTax would place a 23 percent tax on the final sale of all goods and services. Exports and business inputs (i.e. intermediate sales) would not be taxed.

Individuals would file no tax return at all. Businesses would only need to deal with sales tax returns. The IRS and all 20,000 pages of IRS regulations would be abolished.

Under the FairTax, no federal taxes would be withheld from employees' paychecks. Social Security and Medicare would be funded by sales tax revenue.

Why are people like 2bee so ignorant. I put the fair tax link up so people wouldnt have to make stupid statements like that. The poor will receive a check at the beginning of the month to more than cover the taxes that they will have to face for the month.

Tax has become a juggernaut and in all Western Countries it is now a beast with a varacious appetite that needs to be fed daily and has a temper if it gets hungry.

In the UK over 45% of all income generated by work and business is taken and then recycled through Government expenditure.(What is the US equivalent?) This expenditure has dependents.Not just welfare recipients of state benefit but the whole panoply of Government agencies and the public sector.

Economic theorists tell that this " the economic multiplier" can of itself lead to economic growth but its all a matter of timing,Evidence in some small countries with relatively uncomplicated economies suggests that slashing national tax rates produces economic growth and long term benefits.

But a structural change on this scale needs to be carefully managed.It could not be achieved over night.It would hurt too many people until it came on stream.Long term it would create a better life for most.It could happen now If it were not for vested interest worried about what they do until it happens.

You've got an interesting idea. I do think a fair income tax would be better. Your tax also taxes foreign visitors. Perhaps they could get a rebate.

It takes courage and resolve to change the status quo. Accountants would hate this. It would eliminate a lot of their jobs.

First, the "Fair Tax" would require a Constituruional Amendment to implement (expessly replacing the Income Tax and prohibiting any similar tax), which would require a cap on the tax rate.

You would never get enough Congresscritters to agree to it, and then you would never get enough states to ratify the Amendment.

Second, it would destroy the economy, as people reduced their spending to the minimum in order to avoid paying the tax (and substitute black market transactions).

It would work well, especially at wringing taxes from illegal wages. A flat, across the board income tax on every business and person that earns a wage or turns a profit would work also. If EVERYONE paid, the rate would only be between 5%-10%. This would allow us to keep all services and programs plus pay for emergency medical for all citizens. We could also keep all the sloth and waste that IS our government.
The only problem is, everyone that earns would have to pay their share, and we all know that the wealthy are not going to let their minions in Washington pass anything that is fair to all.
What has become of the nation that was formed to resist unjust taxes.
A proposition for a fair or flat tax should be on a national ballot. It needs to be voted on by the people, all the people.
Politicians can and are bought. Populations cannot be!
