Do we really need Congress to enact a Passenger's Bill of Rights (for airline passengers)?

It seems a little rediculous to me. You would think that decent service would be a desire for the airline companies....you'd think the crappy ones would be forced through competition and capitalism to provide a better service or go out of business....

What are your thoughts?

I don't think it is something congress needs to get involved in EXCEPT in cases like we have seen this week where airlines go out of business, or cancel thousands of flights.

There needs to be regulation requiring them to make other arrangements for passengers already in transit.

Apparently we do.

The courts struck down The NY State鈥檚 Passenger Bill of Rights, saying that it is a Federal matter.

Why should the Airlines care, they will just get bailed out again.

Deregulation has ruined every essential thing the public relies on. Let the market rule and we end up with energy shortages, prices going through the roof, and seniors freezing to death. If the free market prevails in the Airline industry, the last few airline companies will go out of business or ask for more expensive government bailouts. What I'm wondering is what we are going to do when the airline companies mismanage themselves out of business, gas is $5.00 a gallon, and all the roads and bridges have crumbled from neglect and lack of maintenance.
