Do you think that we need another "New Deal" president to give Americans back what was stolen from them? |
In terms of public programs and services and more regulation of businesses? Why are we going back to the bad old days of robber barons, monopolies, union busting, lack of government oversight (when it comes to worker safety and protections against poisoning our water, food, and air), a quality education available only to those who are privleged enough to be able to afford it, a non-existent middle class, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Deal It seems so obvious--if people are hungry, they should be fed; if people are homeless, we should build homes for them; if people are sick, the best medical care should be available to them. A socialist society would take the immense wealth of the rich and use it to meet the basic needs of all society. The money wasted on weapons could be used to end poverty, homelessness, and all other forms of scarcity. I think we do, but I don't see how we'll get one without another Great Depression. So in a way we a sort of screwed regardless of what happens. I think what America really needs is a "New Deal Plus," where we go further than the FDR legacy ever did: establish single-payer health care, make unions stronger than they ever were in the 1940s and '50s, establish a de-facto minimum wage of more than $10/hour through a combination of literal min. wage increases and redistributive taxation, regulate the financial and insurance industry far more heavily to eliminate discrimination, predatory lending and income-inverse pricing. (Income-inverse pricing refers to cases where low-income people pay more out of pocket for a service than upper-income people, such as payday loans and certain insurance policies that are more expensive for people with bad credit) |
