I applied for a Game Master job with Blizzard Entertainment?

So I just finished University the other week, having studied Business Management and Computing, and one of the first jobs I applied for was the Game Master job for Blizzard's MMO World of Warcraft.

I have customer service experience as well as the education background and, having played the raiding aspect of the game for three years, a detailed understanding of the game itself I feel I fit what the job description is asking for.

I applied both via Email and snail mail and the auto-reply from the email says the basics and also: "If you dont hear anything back in 4 weeks, consider your application as failed".

Fair enough.

It's now been a little over two weeks since I applied. Some say they have taken longer than 4 weeks to process an application, should I be worried?

Not really. Generally, when these things say 4 weeks, they mean 4 weeks, usually because the sheer number of applications they go through takes that long to seperate the wheat from the chaffe.

When your 4 weeks is up, give it another 2 for good measure, if nothing by then, Id say call or email and ask for an update, at least then they'll tell you for sure.

But even if you get nothing back, don't be disheartened. Leave it a coupld of months then apply again.

Its important you also take this time to replay the previous warcraft games, as well as Diablo and Starcraft for good measure, it shows a depthe of interest and knowledge in their product. They also ask for knowledge of a 2nd language, so start learning french, and perhaps another language as well.

Its also important you try and find work similar to this immidiately, in the even that you don't get in with them this time. A lot of companies, blizzard in particular, like to see that their prospective staff have not just knowledge, but experience working in the area they are applying for. And in general, employers would rather employ someone they know is working, as that shows a certain willingness to take action and to work whatever happens. If they see someone unemployed, the first question that comes to mind is why? Why is this person unemployed?

OK, to summarize.

Don't be worried yet, give it another 4 weeks, then contact them to try and find out where you stand.
If you don't hear from them at all, don't be disheartened. find work in a similar field asap so it can be added to your resume and gives out a better public appearence.
Don't rest on your laurels, take the time you have to constantly improve you're knowledge of their products by playing and replaying, and reading the literature on and off line.
Start learning languages. If you're not fluent, its not a huge issue, its them seeing you're learning that they will be impressed by, its shows them that you want to be a better candidate and by proxy a more valuable staff member. I would recomend Italian as well as french as the Italian community is large, and spills over into the English servers and they are constantly talking in Italian on these servers. Its important you can understand Italian if you want to GM an english server.

I would also recomend looking at taking an MA or PhD in your degree course, then if they don't get back to you, you have other options instead of just finding work. But also, a lot of the MA and PhD courses will find oyu working in a relevant field anyway, so you'll be killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Getting the on the job experience valuable to your resume, and an improved qulaification which is always a bonus for prospective employers.

Anytime you apply anywhere, you should always call within a couple weeks of applying. Taking the initiative to follow up impresses prospective employers.
