Credit card company reversed a disputed charge. Can they change their mind? (my claim is honest and lawful)?

A couple of days ago I called my Credit Card company to dispute a charge made by a shady furniture business who happily took my deposit a few months ago (11/11/07) and never delivered anything (nor were they intending to).
The CC company was very quick and responsive and credited the amount back to me almost immediately (around $2,000).
I suppose they acted quickly due to my excellent credit history and long term relationship with them, in addition to the fact that I had never disputed anything before. So kudos to them for that - I am impressed by their service.
Now, I suppose, they are going to try and get the money back from the actual dishonest business (I can not believe they managed to do that in a day's worth of diligence?). What happens if they don't manage to get the amount back? Will they cancel the refund and charge me again? Or can I consider this case closed on my end?

Thanks in advance.

In most disputes with Credit Cards they will "temporarily" reverse the charge during their investigation.

During the investigation they will contact the merchant and get their side. If the merchant can prove that the charge was legitimate the credit card company will come back and deny your dispute and put the charge back on your account. If they can not prove that the charge was valid the charge will be permanently removed.

Depending on how long it takes for all of this, you should find out a final resolution anywhere from a couple of days to a month.

Now, if the CC company does keep your dispute, in the eyes of the other company you still owe them $2,000. So they probably will come after you. So just keep all of your documentation and be prepared in case they do.

Some credit card companies are good about that so I am glad that it worked out for you. What actually happens with it is your credit card company will actually charge that amount back to the stores account. That store can then dispute the charge from there with the credit card company but as long as you have a legitimate claim you should be ok just hold on to all of your documentation.
