Is a high-paying call center job a wise choice?

I was offered to work in a call center that pays handsome salary plus great benefits. I really would like to work there since i am qualified and would want to earn big.Unfortunately,i am hesitant about it coz the work is not that easy since you have to be flexible in working shifting schedules and amenable to working odd working hours even during holidays. But they do have night differentials. Dealing with irate customers can be also be one of the difficulties a bit sensitive person like me will encounter. But sometimes,we have to be practical and choose a job that will help us make the ends meet and more. But i am confused if i should go for this kind of job or settle for regular job that uses my degree in Business Administration but with lesser pay. Please i really need your advice .thanks

I don't know if it's wise but it might be practical to do so. I was in your situation once; as a CompSci graduate I took a Call center job. Just be aware that this job will probably have an expiration date -- for the short-term it is nice to get the extra pay and you probably won't mind it too much, but after 6 months to a year you will likely burn out on the job.

The reason is because Call Center work is stressful and sensitive people like us will be affected by encounters with angry customers. (It may be worse than you think - working for a phone company I had a crazy person blame me for causing his high blood pressure and threaten to subpoena everyone in the call center and tell George W. Bush's nephew about us -- and the reason he had no phone service was because this guy didn't pay his bill!) I was pretty shocked because noone had ever talked to me like that before in my life. Burnout is not uncommon at ALL though, in Call center jobs.

So anyway if you do take the job, keep looking for a great job in your field while you're employed! Maybe you'll get lucky and find one that involves something you want to do, and pays as well (or better) as this job. Then you can just jump ship from one to the other.

Also when considering jobs, the possibility for advancement at the job with lesser pay should be considered. For example I left the above-mentioned job for a lower-paying job in IT but used the experience I got from that job to go to another one after one year, and making almost twice as much. Whatever you choose to do, good luck!

ask yourself what you need right now and if its money and benefits for you and your family then you should take the call center job. if you can make ends meet and really want to stay focus on the field you went to school for then make the necessary sacrifices and make ends meet with the lower paying job in your field. You can always change up from either job later so regardless of the one you choose now you can switch up later.

You are certainly right when you say sometimes we have to be practical and take the money. I would give the high-paying call center a shot, as pretty much any job just turns into a job, no matter how exciting or awful it seems at first.

However, working in a call center can be an extremely frustrating, stressful experience. It's certainly not for everyone. But it doesn't hurt to try, and if the pay is right, I would give it a shot.
