Taking over a small business?

There is a small business in town (Mass.) that the owner has decided to close. I would like to pick up where he left off with it. I don't feel as though I would have to buy it from him, as he intends on closing it completely before I even had intended on taking it over. I've spoken with the employees and they would love to see me take over.

It is a doggie day care center. It offers entertainment, socialization and exercise for dogs of working "parents" It is in a leased building, which terminates the first of next month. I already have a meeting with the landlord.

I am just wondering now, where to go with this. Who in my town do I need to contact about permits (I'm only assuming I need some) and who do I need to speak to to keep this business going with little to no downtime.

I don't intend on taking out a loan, since it's already a thriving business.. the previous owner just lost interest in the vision of it.

please help!

It's already been discussed with the owner.. He is done with it, he really didn't invest much into it and I already know what's being left.. but that's really not what I'm asking.

What is my next step after I KNOW I'm taking over the business.

First, contact an attorney or CPA. For a small fee they can advise you about incorporating to protect yourself, as well as state and local agencies you need to contact for business licenses and permits you will need.

I don't imagine the owner would simply give you the business for free unless you know him really well. I'm sure there is equipment, furnishings, and other items that he plans to sell once the business is closed. You need to let him know about your interest in taking it over and ask him what he would want for it. If you don't like his answer then you can simply move on.

I think, the exist owner, will be the best person to help you
for some small returns regularly or for one time some consideration. He may not simply give you the business for free. Until and unless, you know him well. There is a possibility of some equipment, furnishings, and other items, which are essentially required, which he might be planing to sell, after the business is closed. You should let him know, about your interest in taking it over, directly or through some one else. May be one of the employee, who happens to be one of his most trusted. You have to find out, only what are his expectations. A mediator may prove to be purpose full, in making a deal, click smoothly.

signing over business papers so it states that you own it!
have a full staff meeting and descuse new plans or just listen to them to see waht works and what don't!
then build a plan!

You wont' need permits if it's alrady an established company you will need an attorny and the papers filled out stating you own it! You may need to get insurance for your workders ect... and for the company ..
then you just got to run it!
don't be afraid to ask for help with the previous owner!
