I have a WinXP Media Center PC and a Vista Business Upgrade DVD. Can I install Vista on a separate partition?

Do I need a windows install on that partition, or can I run setup from XP and then select another partition to install to in order to dual-boot?

You've been able to install windows on multiple partitions for as long as i can remember so should be fine with vista. Though you do say it is an "upgrade" DVD which i have not used. I would just load up the dvd and see what happens.

You need a windows install on each partition.

The upgrade product needs an existing Windows installation. So yes, you need to install XP on your second partition, and upgrade that. But it's entirely possible, I'm dual booting XP on two partitions now.

the upgrade will only work with one xp. also the upgrade will deactivate the xp serial in the windows system. meaning your xp will no longer work after vista upgrade.

do not install vista until you're certain that your system is ready to support it.
