Benazir's Assassination -- the riots?

Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated - history is in the making. It's all quite sad and terrible and I am sure the whole nation (and the world on a whole) is in a state of mourning.

A lot has been said about her political career, scandals and her overall personality. Different people will definitely have different opinions - some would be positive and some would be negative.

But the question is .. how do we respond? I mean look around you! The whole city of Karachi in particular and the whole nation in general is in the grip of terror. Everyone's locked inside their homes, shops and stores have been closed down and riots have erupted.

Go outside and you will be targeted by an angry mob for something you are not even remotely involved in. I called my friend and he informed me that it took him 5 hours for him to reach his house from the business center of Karachi (a journey that takes 45 mins on a weekend and over an hour on a weekday).

The roads were all jammed, some people decided to stay in their office till morning. Mobs vandalized the city (and they are doing so even now). They have been destroying public property, burning tires, damaging cars and setting them on fire. The friend that I talked about reported vandals putting up roadblocks on some of the most major roads of the city by rounding up cars and setting them ablaze. He even told me about an angry mob that set a hospital on fire. Three restaurants of KFC have also been set on fire. Thousands of other government and private offices, stores and food shops have met the same fate - if not worse. Who knows what happened to the people trapped inside these buildings.

I understand the grief and sorrow but this is in no way a manner to express it. You have absolutely no right to harm other's properties.

This is no way for a civic society to behave. Is it?

Are you kidding me? This sounds like the aftermath of a world cup win or an NBA final win.

It is very scary. Angry, ridiculous mobs roaming the streets. As I watched the footage, I felt myself grow angry. I don't know what the answer is. I feel sorry for the innocent people who are caught in the cross hairs. It is very distressing to me. Bhutto was a brave woman who had more grit than all the other leaders combined.

It is my opinion that the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was the act of a cowardly individual. An individual who along with his/her cohorts did not agree with Ms Bhutto's politics. This was a woman who wanted nothing but a united Pakistan. She wanted her country and its people to prosper.

Some individuals feel that the assassination of Ms Bhutto now gives them the right to act like hooligans. I'm not sure what they hope to gain by behaving this way. The end result will only make people suffer even more.

We have seen this type of human behaviour before. Looting and rioting seems to be the norm for us humans during and after a tragic event. Frankly, I have become somewhat disgusted with the human race of late.

The actions of a few in Pakistan are going to give the military regime the ammunition they require to impose more restrictions upon its people.

Yes its sad. Her supporters shouldn't be causing riots, look what their leader stood for- peace, stability etc & now after her death they act like this. I totally understand that they are angry & upset, confused etc but thats no reason to cause riots etc ( like the ppl who possibly killed her do). They are being no better than their "enemies". If they love Benazir then they should do as she has said & not make things worse. I really liked her. I know there was a great deal of scandal around her, mostly over her political career but I think she cared a great deal about Pakistan & her people & was trying to improve it. I think her heart was always in the right place. I do feel she is/was brave for returning to Pakistan. She could of led a normal life but instead went back , putting her life at risk, to help the people of her country. I am not just saying that because of her death. When she first went back I was like wow, shes brave. I hope the country regains some sort of calmality soon. RIP Benazir xo
