Agree, disagree? "Bye Bye Mall Rats"?

My mum was reading TIME magazine and she presented me with an article.

I am not going to type out the whole article here, just some quotes.

"At many teen-choked shopping centers, managers have started booting kids unless they're with a parent"

Forty-six of the one thousand two hundred malls in the United States have set a "curfew" of 6 PM, or even earlier, for teens under eighteen years old, unless escorted by a guardian. This habit is spreading, and what if it soon comes to our area?

The reason is ridiculous, actually laughable.
Apparently, managers are afraid they are losing business on Friday and Saturday nights because troublesome teenagers are frightening the more "serious, older" shoppers away.

If those shoppers truly needed something that bad and are so scared to enter on Fridays/Saturdays, there's always the weekday. Many argue the adults have work, but hey, teens have school.

But really, I don't understand why they are scared.
What can the teens possibly do to them?

Also, what about the millions of dollars that are coming in because of the movies teens attend. Do the malls really want to lose that steady flow of income?

"Mall walkways get clogged, older customers jostled and strollers overturned amid the horseplay"

That sounds like complete chaos.
I'm sorry, but I have NEVER seen that happen at any of the malls I've been to, and I doubt it happens at others.
Sure, the malls walkways do get clogged, but it's not an impossible ordeal to walk through.

If this type of setting is true, just kick out the rowdy bunches that are seriously disturbing people. It can't be everyone.

This article describes us as horrible, destructive fiends.

Geez, we're just a bunch of teens wanting to chill and talk with our friends on the two nights of the week we can. The mall brings many people together, because everyone knows where it is, and it's easier to meet up at then someone's house.

Mall authority, you're obviously overreacting.

Thanks for the advice, but I DO read books.

I actually love them.

It's called being diverse and having a social life also.

;]

Actually they are NOT over reacting.

I know for a fact many adults do not go to the mall because they don't want to have to wade through the crowd of people, many of whom are teenagers simply milling about.

Although I used to enjoy the mall, I also do not go there unless I absolutely have to because of the large gangs of teens that huddle in the mall.

You may not agree, and maybe your friends are not to blame, but a signigicant percentage of teens when in a reasonably large group will become more and more unruly. Unruly to the point of criminal activity. Muggings, beatings, deaths.

Why would I place myself in this danger? Its stupid. I'll take my business elsewhere. So do many other adults. And that's why malls close - gangs of teens.

Ugh! What is this stupidity?! I hope they suffer serious income damages and are forced to make the mall a free place again!

chill out and talk with friends? what kind of miscreant are you? stay away from our malls so that we may do what they were created for, shop in peace without having to worry about the likes of you and your friends chatting inanely amongst eachother and looking bored! go read a book!

I know here in WA state they have banned loitering by underagers in all-night resturants like Sherri's and Denny's now. I asked a waitress about it last time I was there and she told me that these high school kids will come, order one soda, and then stay for HOURS, dirtying up tables and creating a general ruckus.
Sounds like some parents need to put their foot down if you ask me. This is just an issue of politeness.

There are other places to chill and hang out with friends than the mall. I've seen and dealt with the disruptions from you guys milling around, making noise and having little respect for the other shoppers around.

They won't be heart broken by any loss of revenue due to installing a curfew at the mall for minors. You don't spend a lot of money at the mall anyway in comparison to another shopper that has a job. That is why those other people you are talking about don't shop during the weekday, they have jobs. Try it sometime.

I'm a mall rat myself and I think the businesses would be crippled if they did that.

dude totally. i have never seen such crazy behavior at a mall by any group of people. and hell, teens are the main people who go there so they can have a place to spend time having fun together and end up wasting all their parents money on overpriced **** like ******* smoothies (god i love smoothies) and clothes and ****. so they would lose alot of business. and also if the teens are kicked out of malls, they will be forced to go other places and get into trouble like parking garages? or idk...the streets walking around. it's better to have teens in a monitored secure area if they do feel like causing trouble.

if this keeps up it would be badass to have all teens go on strike and not go to malls and see how much ******* money they make then. dude they would take back those curfews so fast...man, that's what i would do. i'll be damned if i'm gonna be restricted from going to the mall, a public place, just cuz of some made up bullshit!
