What is an India Call Center?


Hello, what is it about the India Call Center? I have always watch movies that potray Indians in a bustling office speaking with an american or british accent. It's confusing and strange because here in my country there is no such thing. I know the Indians are very proficient in English & learn new languages easily. They also are university graduates who usually work there if I'm not wrong. What they actually suppose to do? And why do they have to pretend they are from america/britain? How is the pay & working environment? Is it like an insurance/ real estate business?

Wouldn't it be learning a new accent be like in drama class? How long do they learn this new accent(s)? Will it be helpful for drama artistes? I'm in a drama club and its just a curiousity...

Companies in the United States, UK, and other countries out-source their technical support hotlines to India because it costs less to pay them (vs. US, UK, etc.)

About 7/10 times, you will be transfered to an "Indian Call Center" instead of a call center in your own country. These "Indian Call Centers" are notorious for being unable to solve complex problems, or even slightly difficult ones.

In short, big companies pay Indians to answer the phone, deal with people's problems, and make them think the customer is talking with an American/Britan, ect. for a much smaller paycheck than an American/Britan would make.

Even shorter: Cheap Labor = Bigger Profits

Admin is totally right...... that's how it works. I could add that, if indeed they pretend to have a different accent, it's probably because even though english is their main language indians tend to have an accent that is difficult to understand for people in other countries, especially if english is not your mother tongue. So maybe that's why they're asked or even forced to fake it. I wonder if they do a good job at that..... never talked to an indian guy over the phone (yet), just in person and they weren't faking their accent!
