Is the Hazleton PA law in/re illegals the way to go?

The city of Hazleton, Pa. offered whopping tax advantages to industry in order to attract
business which would create jobs for its citizens. Apparently this worked very well, and
over 5,000 new jobs were created. The problem with it is that virtually none of the new
jobs went to people already living in Hazleton, but to a mixture of legal and illegal immigrants.

The majority of the new workers in the low paid jobs were from Latin American
countries. Along with them came many new small businesses targeting a Latin American clientell.
As the result of two violent crimes in Hazleton which involved illegals, a law has been passed
which revokes the business license of anyone hiring or renting to an illegal immigrant.

The large businesses hav stated that they don not have illegal workers any more,
so the brunt of the legal action is expected to be (a judge has held up inforcement)
against landlords and small businesses. Enough illegals have left Hazleton that
several small businesses have shut down, blighting the historic old city center
which they had been restoring.

Apparently the reason that legal and illegal immigrants were hired for the new jobs was that the locals would not work for minimum wage, and immigrants would.

Gee I wonder who will do all the dirty work when all the illegals working for scraps have to leave? I don't think that any Hazelton citizen will do the job. Who's going to cook great mexican food? Who's going to clean the mess in the restaurant? They may not help the econmony much, but they do the work that nobody else wants to do. I sure as hell wouldn't want to clean tables all day for less than minimum wage, while living in crappy housing.

I just think that we all benefit from one another, whether legal or illegal. I know we all can't have "world peace", but hey its worth the try to just live amongst each other like human beings in a give and take world. Report It

yes i have seen this report on this city . they say crime rate had grown in that city and the elderly was afraid to come out of their homes . yes this law look like it's working very good for the citizens of hazleton . it's something that will eventually spread across this country .

Yes - the mayor is doing the right thing

boycott the company's that have hired the illegals. let the govt know enough is enough. and Americans are not going to tolerate the illegals any longer.

That Mayor is going to wind up being a hero to a lot of Americans.

yes, it is the way to go. Even if in the short run it might hurt the economy of the town, in the long run it will help the people who are supposed to be here legally. Eventually I think every state will take up the job of handling the problem of illegal aliens into their own hands since the federal government is doing nothing about them.

Time will tell - other cities are following suit quickly.

Well, if you're looking for someone to put the blame on, I'd take a look at the person or persons who came up with the idea to begin with & got it approved! Chances are, these people are investors & they knew excactly what they were doing! In California, we refer to this as a "land grab" & it seems to work quite well for people who know how to work it to their benefit! Just think, now all those buildings will be a "loss" & someone can buy them for a fraction of their cost & their current owners can also get some insurance money & quite a tax write-off! I'm sure those buildings could use a good airing out due to the simple fact that they have most likely been used to manufacture Methamphetimine by the very people who started this thing to begin with! I'm not saying that all illegals are bad, but I ain't sayin' that all legals are good, either! Only an American truly knows how to "work" our system to the fullest advantage in their favor. Think about it.

Well you stated that jobs go to legal and illegal immigrants, why bring legal immigrants into the picture if they are not the issue first of all. Second, removing sources that allows illegal immigrants to live here in the U.S. is far more effective and less costly than to search for every single one and deport.

YaY!! I like Hazelton Pa. I want to move there.

My standing these days is, 'if the American Communist Liberals Union is against it, there's a real good chance it's an idea that has genuine merit and substance'.

Kudos for Hazelton, and other towns/cities that've manifested the intestinal fortitude to take a position on behalf of their lawful residents.

Love it - wish it happened in more places....
Come here legally - I have NO problem with that...Come here illegally and sponge off the welfare system - I will be more than happy to help bus you back to the border....

it is just a matter of time before all the honest hard working Americans (yes i said Americans) are going to take a stand. i hope every city in this country follows their lead,if enough will maybe we will bankrupt the a.c.l.u and all their partner in the crime of treason.what a beautiful day that would be
