So many left, right and center proclaim fealty to the concept of freedom. Let's see how you rate.

**The following is ENTIRELY hypothetical...**

A> I live in New York City and wish to build a restaurant, to my specifications, on property I own, without anyone's consent.

B> I wish to erect a large, neon sign to advertise my business.

C> I serve Swedish cuisine, so I wish to only hire Swedish-looking (read: caucasian ) staff.

D> I wish to let my customers smoke tobacco products if they are of legal age.

E> As the government provides no financial capital for my enterprise, I do not wish to give the government a financial share of my business (i.e. I keep ALL my earnings.)

F> As the Danes look down their noses at us Sewdes, stereotyping us as drunken buffons, I do not wish to serve any Danes in my establishment.

Name the letters you think my "freedom" should afford me...

First question: A, B, C, E,

Second question: None in California.

First I enjoyed your question as I own a small business, but the only two I think would be fine are "C" and "D." Let me state why:

A. Your property is adjacent to someone elses, and they have rights too. Thus government says what you can and can't do with your property supposedly so you don't infringe upon the rights of your neighbors.

B. The key word is "large." Imagine everyone putting up a "large" neon sign to advertise their business. It would definitely detract from a neighborhood.

C/D got no issues with - by the way on "D" just put in an out door patio and you probably can.

E. This libertarian view suggests you don't need fire protection, police, city water, sewer, storm drains, roads to your business, or even national defense. Sorry but you and I have to pay.

F. Sorry but if you discriminate you are subject to legal ramifications by the DANES so to protect you we make that against the law.
