I was at dell.com trying to customise my desktop. My question is about upgrading to vista?

The options are:
1. No Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Selected [Included in Price]
2. Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium from XP Media Center Edition [ Free!]
3. Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium w/ Dell On Call Vista Support [add $49 or $1/month]
4. Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Business from XP Professional [ Free!]

I don't really wanna spend that $49, so I was looking at option 2 and option 4. If it's free, should I go ahead and select one of those, or is there any trick behind this?

P.S. I don't know yet if I'll eventually upgrade to windows vista. I'm looking at #2 and #4 just because it's free.

Go with the free option #2

Just get Vista, you can make the interface look like Windows XP.

the upgrade is free but you would have to order either xp home w/media or choose xp pro then upgrade from that..
the trick is you dont get vista for free you have to pay for either xp home/media or pay to add pro then get a free 'upgrade'

Select option 2 for home user and option 4 for small business. It's not exactly free because i think you may have to pay a small shipping/handling charge to ship the upgrade cd to you, its about $10.00.

I would definitely go with the second option. The on call vista support from Dell will prove to be very useless. Also, getting a Vista upgrade is very handy to have no matter what. Vista is going to be an amazing operating system. Also, Vista Home Premium has more features for Home users than Business edition does.

(Also, before you go spending millions of dollars on a desktop from Dell, may I suggest you check out the website below? It has very good desktop computers for so much cheaper. I have bought many computers from there and none have ever failed me.)

Unless the is a time limit on the offers, you should get along fine with what you have now for at least several months. Be aware - Vista needs a lot of computer to run at full performance.

I agree. I see no reason to get Vista if XP does what you want.

Micheal and Happy Camper have given excellent advice here. Vista will wreak havoc on your systems resources unless it's configured very powerfully, which if purchased through Dell will run you far above and beyond the average price.

My advice is to WAIT to upgrade. Options 2 and 4 look good,
but not all of your old Windows software will be compatible with Vista--so you have to take that added cost into account.

Also Vista is "brand new" and different internally than Windows XP, I would wait a few months before upgrading. As with any
new Operating System or Software, there are sure to be bugs to work out, even if they are minor.

stay away from vista for now. i have a relative who is a ms engineer. it has major bugs yet.
