Should I take the problems at work to the EEOC or leave it alone?

Several of us have a problem with a supervisor at work. He is moody, yells at you in front of everyone, now don't get me wrong, we are all very thick skinned. We have to be, we work at a 911 center. But it gets to the point that we when he is yelling at us he is in our face with his fists clenched, some of fear for our physical safety. He has also beaten his ex-wife by bashing her face into the hood of a car (we know this because the employees at the business called 911 and we listened to the tapes). There was 19 of us who complained. The government that we work for put him on admin leave and when they did they had a cop standing by in case he got violent. Now they have sent him back because "he only has 5 years to retire and he is going to say sorry". Now that he is back he will only speak to his 2 favorites and just gives the rest of us dirty looks. Should we leave it alone? or take it higher?

Take it higher. Sue the SOB and the city or whomever is in charge of 911. They do that because they get by with it. If he isn't willing to live in the 21st century, let him retire early or get a job digging ditches. Don't take his crap any longer. Also, you stand to get damages for the harm he has done you. Good luck.

Man take it higher! Take it to the EEOC. Take it to anyone who will listen. I used to work for a 911 call center and it is a HIGHLY STRESSFUL position. Use this documented evidence to prove that he is incapable of continuing his job. Obviously the pressure of the job has gotten to him or he already has violent tendencies. Either way, this cannot be allowed to continue as the safety of the public is also at stake. Good luck.

You should let it be unless the behavior returns. It is not against the law to give a "dirty look". Some would argue that how would you know what the look meant unless you were aware of what the man was thinking at the moment. however with that said the slightest aggressive move should be taken seriously and above his station to be addressed if it happens due to his past behavior.

If he only ever talks two people then let it go. However if he ever starts to do it again, politely remind him that his job hangs by a thread. Don't be sarcastic or mean, just tell him as a matter of fact.

The EEOC deals with discrimination. This does not sound like a discrimination case. It seems that your boss is having some mental health issues. You work for a municipal government. You should contact your human resource department and voice your continued concerns about your boss's health. If that does not help, contact the media. They love to pick on city hall. Maybe your boss could be re-directed to another department for the next five years where he is no longer able to create a hostile work environment for you.
